What to do in New York? Here's a guide with things to do in New York City if you're researching for an upcoming trip.
I recently took a trip to New York City, and since I haven't been in a very long time, I wanted to do all the touristy things and get as much in as I can. I spent a very long time doing research on the internet before I left, looking for tips and advices from different sources such as
Yelp and
TripAdvisor, and created an itinerary that I thought I would share.
My particular trip was 6 days and 5 nights in December, with the first and last days being traveling days, so you can adjust those days (as well as arrival/departure times) accordingly for your own trip. I stayed in Midtown, east of Time Square, so feel free to substitute restaurants around your own hotel. Also keep in mind that the itinerary included an afternoon and evening blocked off for New Years Eve festivities, so you can easily substitute that for something else.
*** Prior to departure, I purchased the
New York Pass (NYP) and had them shipped to my house so I would be ready to go. At first I was hesitant about it, but after doing some calculations and reading
reviews for it, I decided that I would definitely save some money if I get the pass vs. paying for each attraction individually. I also decided that the $8 shipping fee was worth it so that I could have the pass with me vs. having to waste precious time in NY waiting in line to pick it up. I got a 2-Day pass for $110, and it seems that they have different sales going on throughout the year with the prices fluctuating (it's currently at $130), so if you plan ahead you can watch the price and jump in when it's lower.
Day 1:
- Evening arrival at LaGuardia Airport
- I used Quick Ride because I wanted something reliable and didn't want to deal with a crazy taxi driver on upon my arrival in NYC in the dark. It was my first time using them, and my experience was flawless.
- Check in at hotel
- Dinner
- Had diner at a Heartland Brewery a few blocks away from the hotel, and realized it was a brewery chain in NY once I got there. Really enjoyed the food, but the beer was what stood out the most.
- Stop by a subway station to buy a pass from a kiosk ($29 for a 7-day unlimited subway & bus rides), so you will be ready to go the next morning.
- Find a local drug/grocery store to pick up essentials, snacks, water
Day 2:
- 7AM: Today Show
- Show/taping starts at 7AM, it's recommended that you show up around 6AM if you want a good spot on West 48th Street, between 5th and 6th Ave. It's a neat thing to do/see if you watch the show. I got there a little after 8AM since I didn't care for a prime spot, and was still able to see plenty and partake in the excitement.
- 10AM: United Nations tour
- $16 adult, $11 student, $9 child; 1hr guided tour, it was informative and neat to see the General Assembly Hall and the Security Council Chamber
- You need to go through a security checkpoint before you can actually enter the building to buy your ticket for the tour. NO LIQUID allowed past the security point.
- Tip: You want to go there as early as possible; when we left, the line to get through security was massive!
- 12:00PM: South Street Seaport
- It was a disappointment because most of the shops and restaurants were all closed due to damanges from Hurricane Sandy, so I wasn't able to see/do anything there, and it was a bit of a waste of time and effort to get there. Otherwise, this would've been a good mid-day attraction and have lunch here.
- Lunch
- We had to find a plan B since South Street Seaport didn't work out, so we went to Hale & Hearty for some soup and sandwiches that hit the spot on a cold, rainy day.
- Break/Nap
- It was our first day, so we wanted a break to rest our legs after an early start
- Dinner
- We went to Katz's Delicatessen for its famous Pastrami, and it didn't disappoint. The wait was long and the process was disorganized, but all will be worth it when you take a bite into that sandwich.
- Rockerfeller Center Ice Skating
- $25 adult, $10 rentals; We waited it about 1.5hours to get our skates, but it was the height of touristy season, so I somewhat expected it. They have 1.5hours skating sessions, and then the zamboni comes out and resurfaces the ice. You're allowed to wait on the side and go back after the zamboni is done.
Day 3:
- 10:30AM: 911 Tribute Center (NYP)
- Emotional tour and a must see before going to the 911 Memorial. Make sure you get there early to avoid the lines.
- Lunch
- A quick bite around the TWC/Wall Street area
- 1:00PM: Wall Street Walks (NYP; Reservation required)
- Meets 15minutes prior to tour time, and get ready to walk. I enjoyed this informative tour, as did others on Yelp.
- 3:00PM: 911 Memorial (Reservation required)
- It is free, but you MUST request tickets if you are planning on going. There are very few standby tickets the day of. Be ready to go through a security check, but liquids are allowed.
- 4:30PM: Grand Central Terminal (NYP)
- Self guided audio tour of the famous terminal, and it was quite something to see it in person after seeing it countless time on the big screen.
- 6:30PM: Madame Tussauds (NYP)
- Went to this famous wax museum in Time Square not expecting much, but everyone had a lot more fun than expected. NYP holders get to go in a shorter line at the entrance.
- Night: Time Square
- Explore Time Square after Madame Tussauds. You could feel the energy of the Big Apple just by walking around.
Day 4:
- 8AM: Empire State Building (NYP)
- I can't stress enough how important it is to get there at 8AM!!!!! The line becomes massive and will start to circle around the block if you don't arrive early enough, and you will find yourself waiting 2-3hours!
- Early lunch
- Quick bite around Rockerfeller Center, you will have plenty of choices
- 11:30AM: NBC Studio Tour (NYP; reservation required)
- Must pick up your tickets 30minutes in advanced on the 2nd floor of the NBC Experience Store. An interesting tour, but no cameras are allowed.
- 1:30PM: Radio City Music Hall Stage Door Tour (NYP)
- The tour entrance/ticket counter is NOT at the main entrance/box office, instead it's on back side of the building on 51st Street! Once you get there, look for a sign for the tour. It was an excellent tour and we even got to watch the Rockettes from a special viewing area since there was a show going on during our tour.
- 3:00PM: FDNY Fire Zone (NYP)
- We missed the last "tour," which is just a fire safety presentation, for the day. However, it was still neat to see a FDNY fire engine in person and try on a firefighter's jacket.
- Snack/Break
- Grab a quick snack in the Rockerfeller Center area
- 4:00PM: Rockerfeller Center Tour (NYP)
- This is a walking art tour around Rockerfeller Center. Our guide was very knowledgeable and I really enjoyed learning about all the great art in the area, and the history behind Rockerfeller Center.
- Bonus: If you buy your Top of the Rock ticket in advanced to follow this tour, your tour guide will escort you to skip all the lines except for the security check point. This saved us hours since the line was outside the building and circled the block.
- 5:15PM: Top of the Rock Observation Deck (NYP)
- A better view/experience than the Empire State Building. If you are going to both, it's a good idea to do day time at one and night time at the other.
Day 5:
- 10:30AM: Picnic preparation
- Stop by your new favorite local stores and get stuff to go
- 11:30AM: Central Park
- Visit this iconic park in NYC. To make your visit even more memorable, sit on one of the benches and people watch while having a picnic. There is also a zoo within the park
- 1:30AM: Fifth Avenue
- If you wish, walk down Fifth Avenue and shop to your heart's content
- 3:00PM: Staten Island Ferry
- During our visit, visiting the Statue of Liberty wasn't an option due to damages from Hurricane Sandy, so the next best thing was taking the Staten Island Ferry.
- FREE; Get an unobstructed view of the Statue of Liberty as well as downtown. If you don't plan on staying on Staten Island, you can get right back on the ferry immediately after getting off.
- Dinner
- New Year's Eve in NYC!
- If you have dinner/party reservations in the Time Square area, get there as early as possible and enjoy ringing in the new year with the crowd!
Day 6:
- Departure to JFK
- Since there is subway accessibility, we took the JFK Airtrain and made it to the airport without any problems. It is $5.00 per person, and if you have an unlimited subway ticket then that portion is free, otherwise it's just another $2.50.
